The Jaabar (Ja'bar) Castle (قلعة جعبر) was reconstructed in the 12th Century by Nur Al-Din (نور الدين محمود زنگي) near Al-Thawra (الثورة or Al-Taqba, الطبقة) town in the Raqqa Province (محافظة الرقة). This vintage photo from 1938 is unique as it shows the castle overlooking the Euphrates Valley prior to the building of the Taqba Dam (سد الثورة) which flooded the region and turned the castle into an island. Photo taken by the Armée Du Levant.
