The Damascus Gate (باب دمشق) otherwise known as the Gate of the Column (باب العامود) is one of the main gates of the old city of Jerusalem (البلدة القديمة (القدس)) and is located on the northwestern side of the city walls. While it has existed since the Roman times, the current gate was built in 1537 under the rule of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (سليمان اول). Historically it connected to the road leading to Nablus | نابلس (pre-occupation | قبل الاحتلال) and from there to Damascus (pre-Nakba | قبل النكبة) - hence the name.
