1910s Damascus's Marjeh Square and the Telegraph Column Vintage Postcard Reprint

This is a vintage postcard reprint of Marjeh Square (ساحة المرجة), one of the main squares in Damascus, circa 1910.

The newly built Telegraph Column (نصب التلغراف, عمود التلغراف, عمود المرجة) is commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II and built by Italian architect Raimondo D'Aronco in 1904-5 to commemorate the completion of a telegraph line between Damascus and Mecca. At the top of the column sits a bronze replica of Yildız Mosque (جامع يلدز) in Istanbul.

You can see a camel caravan marching through the square (maybe from Al-Ghouta?) along with the newly minted Tram line (inaugurated 1907). Many of the buildings in the background were burned down during the French bombardment of Damascus on May 25 1945.
