1938 photograph of the Roman ruins in Shahba (شهبا), Al-Suwayda Province (مُحافظة السويداء), with a young girl strolling casually down its well preserved pavement and colonnade. Known in late antiquity as Philippopolis, named after Roman emperor Philip the Arab (فيليب العربي), it was built to celebrate the thousand year foundation of Rome. This Dry plate negative reprint is from the American Colony/ Matson Photo Service.
