1949 Ain Al-Arous, Raqqa Stamp Sheet Framed Reprint

This 1949 Stamp has many layers to its story. It is part of a commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The fully independent Syrian Republic (the official name of the country until 1958) joined the Universal Postal Service a month into its independence in 1946. Interestingly, this stamp features an illustration of the French 'Armee Du Levant' Fort in Ain Al-Arous (Spring of the Bride | عين العروس), in the Tal Abyad district (منطقة تل أبيض) of Raqqa Province (محافظة الرقة). The spring gives rise to the Balikh River (نهر البليخ) and is famed for its archeological sites and for being mentioned in Agatha Christie's travel memoir, "Come, Tell Me How You Live" who had visited the spring in 1938 during her honeymoon with archeologist Max Mallowan.
