1870s Al-Aqsa Entry and Courtyard Vintage Framed Photo Reprint

This 1870s photo beautifully captures the serenity of the Al-Aqsa Mosque | جامع الأقصى‎ (or Qibli Mosque | المصلى القبلي) courtyard and triple-arched entry. You can see worshippers (likely) listening to the Imam's recitations and can imagine the wind blowing through the trees. Photo is by Felix Bonfils between 1870-1879.

This revered site in the Old City of Jerusalem (البلدة القديمة (القدس)), Palestine is located in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound (المسجد الاقصى), also known as al-Ḥaram al-Sharif (الحرم الشريف) which also includes the Dome of the Rock (قبة الصخرة). While initially a small building erected in the 7th century, Al-Aqsa Mosque as we know it was originally built by either the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik (r. 685–705) or his successor al-Walid I (r. 705–715) (or both) as a congregational mosque on the same axis as the Dome of the Rock. It has been renovated and rebuilt over the centuries - repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, used as a palace by the Crusaders and even the target of an arsonist under the Israeli occupation however it perseveres.
