1950 Damascus's Marjeh Square and the Telegraph Column Framed Vintage Photo Reprint

This 1950 photo of Marjeh Square (ساحة المرجة), one of the main squares in Damascus captures a moment in time, long forgotten.

The centerpiece is the grand Telegraph Column (نصب التلغراف, عمود التلغراف, عمود المرجة) commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II and built by Italian architect Raimondo D'Aronco in 1904-5 to commemorate the completion of a telegraph line between Damascus and Mecca. At the top of the column sits a bronze replica of Yildız Mosque (جامع يلدز) in Istanbul.

On the far right you can see the Old Umayyad Hotel (now the Omar Al-Khayam Hotel (فندق عمر الخيام)) on Al-Joumhouria Street ( شارع الجمهورية) along side the Barada River (نهر بردى). In front of it a tram slides along avoiding pedestrians and 1940s classic cars. Straight ahead the clocktower and buildings have been long torn down and replaced with more modern monstrosities.
