Built in the mid-12th century the Cathedral of Our Lady of Tortosa (كاتدرائية طرطوس), served as a popular stop for pilgrims during the Crusades. It is likely the only Latin church still standing that was fortified for defense, despite falling to the Mamluks in 1291. Since 1956, the building has served as the National Museum of Tartus.
