Taken between 1842-44, this speckled panorama is consdiered the oldest photograph of the Dome of the Rock (قبة الصخرة) and the al-Ḥaram al-Sharif (الحرم الشريف). it was initially built by the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik (عبد الملك ابن مروان ابن الحكم) and is considered the oldest surviving example of Islamic architecture- not just in Palestine but in the entire region. It is the most recognized landmark in Jerusalem (القدس), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and most importantly holds great religious value across Abrahamic faiths. It houses the Noble Rock (الصخرة المشرفة) and Muslims believe it is the site of where the Prophet Abraham attempted to sacrifice his son Ishak and is the starting point for the Prophet Muhammad's Night Journey ( الإسراء والمعراج).
The photographer is Frenchman Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey who is known for taken some of the earliest photographs across Greece, Palestine, Egypt and Syria - interestingly enough, his archive lay undiscovered until the 1920s and only publicly known until 80 years after that.
