The magnificent Takiyya Sulaymaniyya (التكيه السليمانيه) is considered the most important Ottoman building in Damacus, ushering this style of architecture. Initially commissioned by the Ottoman sultan Suleiman I (Suleiman the Magnificent | سليمان اول) between 1554 and 1559, it was built to salvage his soul after the death of his two sons (one by the Sultan order of execution, the other from grief). Over time, it became an important pilgrimage stop on the route to Mecca. The last Ottoman sultan Mehmed VI (محمد سادس) is buried in its cemetery.
