This 1877 photo (reprint) of the Dome of the Rock (قبة الصخرة) in Jerusalem (القدس) is one of the earliest photographs of this iconic mosque. On the left, you can see the Dome of the Chain (قبة السلسلة) and the grounds seem to be in need of caretaking. Located in al-Ḥaram al-Sharif (الحرم الشريف), it was initially built by the the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik (عبد الملك ابن مروان ابن الحكم) and is considered the oldest surviving example of Islamic architecture. It is the most recognized landmark in Jerusalem, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and most importantly holds great religious value across Abrahamic faiths. It houses the Noble Rock (الصخرة المشرفة) and Muslims believe it is the site of where the Prophet Abraham attempted to sacrifice his son Ishak and is the starting point for the Prophet Muhammad's Night Journey ( الإسراء والمعراج).
