This postcard reprint of the Great Mosque of Aleppo (جَـامِـع حَـلَـب الْـكَـبِـيْـر) features an elevated view of the largest and one of the oldest Mosques in Aleppo (Halab). Built by the Umayyad's it was meant to rival in its magnificence the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus. The Minaret itself was built in 1090 AD and commissioned by Aleppan judge Ibn al-Khashshab during the rule of the Seljuk dynasty. The Great Mosque is part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation of the 'Ancient City of Aleppo (مدينة حلب القديمة). Sadly, it was heavility damaged in 2013 and the stone minaret was destroyed (now under reconstruction).
